Dutch
Etymology
First attested as weerwille in 1291. Compound of Middle Dutch weder (“against”) and the dative singular form of wil (“will, desire”). The toponym apparently derives from an effort by the lords of Ruinen to colonise a plot of land against the wishes of the inhabitants of Echten and the monks of Ruinen. The toponym was thus chosen to mock the two slighted parties.
