First attested as nova ecclesia in 1224. Calque of West Frisian Westernijtsjerk, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian nija (“new”) and tzercka (“church”). The element wester (“western, west-”) was added later to distinguish the settlement from Oosternijkerk.
