The old picture was good but it looked more like the aftermath of a storm. This one is more specific and also nice and old. I wonder if we can find something even older and arty to match the BP and TR though? — Hippietrail21:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I saw this one too, and picked the other partly in jest, but also because I knew it would eventually have to be replaced. Okay, the new one is better yes, but it still doesn't match the style of the other two. Davilla13:06, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Judging by the immediate outpouring of topics for GP, I'd say this was long overdue. Well done HT! I think you've captured the right element. --Connel MacKenzieTC23:48, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Adding features to Wiktionary: Images, audio pronunciation keys...
Latest comment: 18 years ago1 comment1 person in discussion
Why not go full-service? Wiktionary could include images (particularly to go with nouns), possibly short video clips (to go with verbs), and (very usefully) audio clips to assist with pronunciation, which would be useful for people who are not native speakers of English (as well as for many native English speakers in the case of obscure or oft-mispronounced words).
Contextual sentence examples would also be useful.
And not least, it would be very useful to add links to translations of the words in English Wiktionary to corresponding words in other languages, complete with their own audio pronunciation keys, etc.

Wiktionary welcomes images on main namespace pages. We do require that they be uploaded to Commons: so that they can be shared with all sister projects.
Very few experiments have been done with video so far. I'd expect sign language videos to be very helpful, but I am no expert on any version of sign language. Depictions of an action (verbs) may have some surprising pitfalls, but you are welcome to experiment.
Each "word of the day" is given at least one audio link. The process of recording separate audio for each entry is time-consuming and therefore attracts fewer volunteers. Please plug in your microphone, download audacity.exe (or similar) and help as you can!
Example sentences are also encouraged. For "translations of the week" the entries are usually reviewed to ensure that example sentences are present (as most translators have a very hard time, otherwise.) Citations from published sources (i.e. books) are preferred over hypothetical examples. Both are helpful in their own way.

I finally got irritated at the favicon being the same as WP that I came searching for a discussion...lo and behold it seems to come up about every month or two. Hence, I come to this page specifically to propose a change to the Grease Pit itself. Namely, to create a section for "Common Questions" or "FAQ's"...some place to put answers by topic so that they don't get brought up again? Though, I fully intend on bringing this one up again. It really needs to be unique. -- IrishDragon03:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will admit that a restructuring of the GP (as well as the BP), so that topics got resolved, instead of forgotten, as too often happens, would be nice. I had once proposed using transcluded subpages, like we do for WT:VOTE. This would have a few benefits, such as being able to easily remove a topic, once it was resolved. Additionally, if interest (or knowledge) for a topic does not exist, the page could simply be reincluded at a later date. Also, people could watch topics they were interested in, and ignore ones they weren't (although, you would have to periodically make sure you have all the topics you're concerned about on your watchlist, as I'm not aware of a cascade watch feature). Finally, topics would be able to be cross-posted, which would be useful in many cases. -Atelaesλάλει ἐμοί12:23, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lookups Should Be Quicker, With Default Language
Wiktionary is a great service with great functionality. My biggest wish is for Wiktionary to allow users to set a default lookup language. For example, if I'm studying German and only interested in translations, I would like to type in "melden" and have the German entry come to the top of the screen--not the Dutch entry. I also would like to be able to set the site to go to the "best guess" match automatically, with suggestions for other entries at the top of the screen in case it is not the right entry.
If you have an account, try using the "Tabbed Languages" tool (at Special:Preferences under "Gadgets"). This divides the page so it only shows one language at a time, and it remembers which language you've looked at last so that the next time you visit a page, that language is displayed. So if you look at melden and select the German tab, then when you go to golden, you'll see German again automatically. Smurrayinchester (talk) 20:21, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Looks good, thank you both! Here's hoping this reduces the incidences of folks accidentally starting a thread on the main forum pages, instead of the current-month pages. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig16:49, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Does Special:Statistics Update?
I would like to know, if ] updates, or needs people to change it.
