From Middle High German wüeste, from Old High German wuostī, from Proto-West Germanic *wōstį̄. Equivalent to wüst +‎ -e. Also merged with Middle High German wüestene, from Old High German wuostin, *wuostinna, from Proto-West Germanic *wōstini (through regular reduction of feminines in -en(e) to -e, compare Küche etc.). The latter is cognate with Dutch woestijn.
