Apparently a mixture of arējs ((temporary) plowman) and an unattested form *artājs, from art (to plow) +‎ -ājs. Cognates include Proto-Slavic *ortajь (archaic Russian ратай (rataj), Old Church Slavonic ра́тай (rátaj)).[1]
