Uncertain. Possibly from an otherwise unattested onomatopoeic stem + -p (obsolete instantaneous suffix) + -ít (verb-forming suffix). The same stem is found in csillapodik (to calm down, diminish) and csillapul (to calm down). First attested in 1608.[1]
