Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rwak (leaf). Cognate with Burmese အရွက် (a.rwak, leaf), Japhug tɤjwaʁ, Situ tɐ jwɐk. Compare Lhao Vo afo', Zaiwa ahaq, Longchuan Achang a³¹xʐoʔ⁵⁵ and Hpon ăʀùʔ.

The etymology may be further related with *r-pak (leaf, leaflike part, flat object), as Burmish *w- occasionally correspond to *p- in other TB (e.g. Tibetan ཕག་པ (phag pa) : Burmese ဝက် (wak), Pela vaʔ³¹ (“pig”)); thus also cognate with Western Lalu pʰɪ̠²¹, Lisu ꓒꓬꓽ (pʰjɑ̀), Hani albavq, Naxi piel, Tangut 𗟛 (*bạ²), Horpa lba lə, Southern Pumi sɐ¹³ fpɑ⁵⁵ and Jingpho hpalap (tea).
