Etymology

An onomatopoeia with an uncertain origin. Probably from the same stem as the verb fecseg (to babble, chatter). It's also possible that it's from Proto-Finno-Ugric *päčkɜ (swallow). Cognates include Finnish pääsky and Estonian pääsuke.[1][2]
