From Middle High German vetten, fetten (“to make fat”), partially from Old High German fatōn (“to nourish, feed, make fat”), from Proto-West Germanic *fadōn (“to nourish, feed, graze”), partially equivalent to Fett + -en. Cognate with German Low German fetten (“to smear”), Old English fadian (“to lead, guide, arrange”).
