Borrowed from Dutch hangmat, by folk etymology reinterpreted as hänga (hang) +‎ matta (rug). Ultimately derived from Spanish hamaca, from Taíno amaca, *hamaka. Compare origin of French hamac and German Hängematte. First attested in 1679.[1][2]
