From Proto-Tocharian *krupiye (whence also Tocharian A kärpi), from Proto-Indo-European *Hrewp-i-yo, a form of *Hrewp- (“to break, tear up”) from *Hrew- (“to tear, pluck”). Cognate with English rough, Latin rūdus (“lump of metal”), and Sanskrit रोमन् (roman, “body hair, wool”), among others.
