From Proto-Tocharian *krupiye (whence also Tocharian A kärpi), from Proto-Indo-European *Hrewp-i-yo, a form of *Hrewp- (to break, tear up) from *Hrew- (to tear, pluck). Cognate with English rough, Latin rūdus (lump of metal), and Sanskrit रोमन् (roman, body hair, wool), among others.
