German

Etymology

From dialects, including Central Franconian latze (to pay). Most dialect dictionaries besides the Rheinisches Wörterbuch attest only the senses “to feast, batten” and “to be idle, linger”. Plausibly derived from Latz (bib, flap), thus originally “to open one’s bib”. This might also explain the aforementioned two senses, but the relation is uncertain.
