The origin of this verb is uncertain; it may ultimately derive from mag (seed, core, originally supposedly “body”) with a causative suffix -aszt, compare magas (tall, high). For a similar semantic change, compare Latin altus (high, tall)exaltāre (to exalt, praise), German erheben (to raise; (dated) to praise), and English elevated (raised; exalted).[1]
