Emilian
Etymology
Possibly from Vulgar Latin *puttāna, from Latin puta (“girl”),[1] but more likely a borrowing from Old Occitan putana, cf. Old French putaine, French putain, Italian puttana, Sicilian buttana.[2][3]
Latin puta (“prostitute”) is attested in the sixth century (Gregory of Tours). The change of meaning from "girl" to "prostitute" is due to euphemism, a process that is well known to other periods and languages.[4]
