From German schachern, from Yiddish שאַכערן (shakhern), from Hebrew סָחַר (sāḥar)/שָׂכַר (śạḵạr). Cognate with Danish sjakre, Norwegian Bokmål sjakre and Norwegian Nynorsk sjakre, sjakra. Etymologically identical to tjacka (“get, buy (colloquial)”) from Romani.
