From Middle Dutch schrompelen, a frequentative in -elen. It might derive from an unattested verb *schrompen, from Old Dutch *scrumpon, from Proto-West Germanic *skrumpōn; but note the etymology at German schrumpfen: the Middle Dutch may well represent a variant of synonymous schrimpen (Dutch schrimpen), perhaps also influenced by rompelen meaning the same.
