Vietnamese
Etymology
Unclear.
Usages suggest possible conflation of two different etyma borrowed from Middle Chinese. Namely:
- 靜 (MC dzjengX, “to be still”) (SV: tĩnh) or 靖 (MC dzjengX, “‘to be still’ → ‘to still’”) (SV: tĩnh); if true, then the tonal, register, and rhyme correspondences are still typical for an early loan, and
- 晴 (MC dzjeng, “clear (of weather)”) (SV: tình); if true, then the tonal correspondence, atypical for an early loan, results from either:
- that 晴 acquired the reading tạnh from either 靜 or 靖 (see also tỉnh & sảnh for analogies), or
- that 晴 was borrowed rather late and from a regional Sinitic lect.
