From Proto-Germanic *þanhtu-, from Proto-Indo-European *tonk-tu-.[1] According to Pokorny, this is related to *tek- (“to weave, to plait”),[2] see also Latin texō (“to weave”), Old High German dūhen (“to press”). Cognate to Old Norse þáttr.
