Seeing as dialectal variants like maarain, maarama exist, the word is probably an alteration of earlier *vadarma or *vabarma (see vadelma) by analogy with muurain (“cloudberry”) (< *mu(u)rama), possibly inspired by the regular loss (generally) of medial *b, *d, *g into *vaarma.
