Etymology

Borrowed from Middle Low German klüflōk (garlic) (cf. German Knoblauch, Dutch knoflook), with klüf- from Proto-Germanic *kliuban (to split, to cut) and -lōk “onion, leek” (cf. German Lauch, Dutch look, English leek), i.e., originally “split, segmented onion.” This loanword is first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries.[1]
