Probably from žádati +‎ -ný, with constructions such as nebylo tam žádného člověka (lit. the wanted person wasn't there) being reinterpreted as "no person was there", or from a phonological reduction of *ni *že *edinъ (not one) (see nižádný).[1] Compare Old Polish żadny and Slovak žiadny.
