Ancient Greek
Etymology
Traditionally derived from a u-stem formation of δικεῖν (dikeîn, “to throw”). Beekes expresses mild doubts about this, but notes that the word is likely Pre-Greek regardless, due to the older form of Mycenaean Greek (de-ku-tu-wo-ko (dektuworgos)) demonstrating ε-ι variation in the first vowel. See also δίσκος (dískos, “discus”).[1]
