Unknown. Beekes calls connections to δρίος (dríos, “thicket”), in the sense of "swelling," a "mere guess." Pokorny suggests the latter connection and also compares δριμύς (drimús, “piercing, sharp”), Proto-Indo-European *der- (“to flay, split open”).[1]
