From Proto-Mordvinic *veśə, inherited from Proto-Uralic *we(ń)ćɜ (“every, all, whole”). Cognate with Udmurt воч (voć), Komi-Zyrian вач (vać), possibly cognate with Hungarian össze (“together”). The Uralic word may be borrowed from Indo-Iranian; compare Proto-Iranian *wícwah (“all, every; whole”).

Alternative theories suggest a borrowing from Russian весь (vesʹ, “all”) or a derivation from Proto-Mordvinic *vej (“one”) +‎ *śe (“this”); compare Moksha сембе (śembe, “all”).
