Cognate with Old East Slavic стрьмление (strĭmlenije), Slovene strmẹ́ti (“to rise”) (tonal orthography), Czech strmět (“to rise”), Slovak strmieť (“to rise”), Polish trzmić (“to stick out”). Related to Proto-Slavic *strьmъ (“steep”). Per Vasmer, possibly derived from the vowel assimilation found in Proto-Slavic *strьmь, *strьmьnъ (compare стрём (strjom, “fear”), стрёмный (strjómnyj, “scary”)), from Proto-Slavic *strъm-.
