The origin is uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from a source related to the etymon of սարոյ(saroy, “cypress”).[1] Compare also Arabicسِدْر(sidr, “the name of various trees”), Persianسدر(sadar, “lote-tree”), Ancient Greekκέδρος(kédros, “cedar”).
