Etymology

Plausibly from the root ن ج ر (n-j-r) with other formations related to burning heat. However the pattern is unlikely to be native to Arabic, and for this reason this word has been declared “Persian”, in which language the term has not been encountered, or would be declared an Arabism in turn—more conspicuously the lexeme instead dissimilates, avoiding the homorganic affricate disallowed in Semitic, Old Georgian ჯინჭარი (ǯinč̣ari, nettle). The manifold distortions in Old Armenian եղիճ (ełič, nettle) and its variants must also be considered.
