Inherited from Middle Persian (tndr /tundar, tundur/), from Proto-Iranian *tánHtā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tánHtar-, from Proto-Indo-European *ténh₂-tōr or *tónh₂-tōr, whence Latin tonitrus may also be derived; ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tenh₂- (“to thunder, resound”). Compare similarly *tónh₂-r̥, whence Germanic and Celtic cognates.
Cognate with Parthian (tndwr /tandur/), Sogdian (twntr /tundar/), Sanskrit स्तनति (stanati, “to resound; to thunder”), Irish torann (“thunder, loud noise”), English thunder.
