ܒܣܕܝܐ

Contraction of ܒܝܬ ܐܣܕܐ (bêṯ ʾĕsāḏē, “pillow, couch, place to rest upon”, literally “at the pillows”), from ܒܝܬ (“house; site, position, location”) and ܐܣܕܐ (ʾĕsāḏā, “pillow”); inherited from earlier Aramaic אִיסָדָא (ʾĕsāḏā, “thing placed beneath, at the base or bottom; pillow”). Cognate to Hebrew יְסוֹד (yǝsṓḏ, “base, foundation”), Arabic وِسَادَة (wisāda, “a thing placed under the base of the head to sleep upon; cushion, seat or place to rest something upon”), Ugaritic 𐎊𐎒𐎄 (ysd, “base, foundation”), Akkadian 𒅖𒁲 (/⁠išdu⁠/, “base, foundation”), ultimately Proto-Semitic in origin. Also found as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּיסָדְיָא (bēsāḏyā, “pillow”), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּי סָדְיָא (bē sāḏyā, “pillow”), and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܣܦܵܕܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (spādīṯā, “pillow”).

     ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܥܠ ܒܣܕܝܐ ܕܡܟ ܗܘܐ ܒܚܪܬܗ ܕܣܦܝܢܬܐ. ܘܐܬܘ ܐܩܝܡܘܗܝ. ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ. ܪܒܢ ܠܐ ܒܛܝܠ ܠܟ ܕܐܒܕܝܢ ܚܢܢ.

     hū ḏên ʾĪšūʿ ʿal bēsāḏyā ḏəmeḵ wā: bə-ḥarəṯāh ḏa-səp̄ītā. wə-ʾĕṯaw ʾăqīmū, wə-ʾāmrīn lēh, Rabban, lā ḇəṭīl lāḵ də-ʾāḇdīn nan.
