Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑁄𑀇𑀮𑀸 (koilā, “burning charcoal”), from Sanskrit कोकिल (kokila, “lighted coal; charcoal”), of Munda origin. Despite strong phonetic and semantic similarities, unrelated to English coal, which comes from PIE *ǵwelH- (“to burn, shine”) (whence Hindi जलना (jalnā) ultimately derives).
