From Old Khmer ពញា (bañā, title of high-ranking official), probably a corrupted form of °ព្រញា (°brañā), from which Old Thai พรญา was derived; or from Mon ဗညာ (pəɲɛ̀a, title of royalty and high nobility).[1] Cognate with Lao ພະຍາ (pha nyā), and re-borrowed as Modern Khmer ពញា (pñiə).
