Etymology

Believed to be a shortened form of พณหัวเจ้าท่าน (pá-ná-hǔua-jâao-tân),[1][2] which is perhaps a corruption of พระหัวเจ้าท่าน (prá-ná-hǔua-jâao-tân), literally "the divine being at head, he the lord".

Noun

ฯพณฯ (pá-ná-tân)

  1. (now proscribed) used as a title for or term of address to a dignitary: Excellency, Grace, Honour, etc.

Usage notes

  • In former times, the term was used for high-ranking noblemen. The modern government of Thailand has, at least four times, ordered banning the use of this term: first in 1944, second in 1945, third in 1976, and fourth in 2005; but the term is still in use.[1][2] The reasoning of the government is that honouring a person as "lord" or "divine being at head" is incompatible with the democratic principles of equality.[3]
