Inherited from Old Burmese ကိယ် (kiy), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *gjəy² (“parrot”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *gjəy (“parrot, parakeet”); compare the second syllable of Mizo va-ki (“parrot”) (STEDT). The Tibeto-Burman root appears to be onomatopoeic.
