Ancient Greek

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *welh₃- (to catch, seize, strike) +‎ -σκομαι (-skomai). The aspiration was probably taken from αἱρεῖν (haireîn) and/or ἑλεῖν (heleîn). The aorist forms reflect the stem *wḷh₃eh₁-, where the passive marker -η- appears as -ω- as a result of the preceding laryngeal's coloring effect. Cognates include Latin vellō (to pluck, demolish).
