From Proto-Indo-European *h₁elh₂- (“to drive somewhere”), albeit with no certain cognates.[1][2] Possible cognates include Latin alacer (“lively, active, brisk”), Proto-Germanic *alaną (“to spurn, drive”), and *lanō (“lane”)); Bengali ইলিশ (iliś, “hilsa fish”) was traditionally connected and interpreted as a "go-lord", but this is generally considered folk etymology.
