Etymology

Ultimate derivation somewhat unclear. The initial kara- portion is generally thought to be (kara, shell, husk) in reference to the body as the "shell" in which the soul resides.[1] The exact nature of the final -da suffix is left unexplained.[1][2]

Some sources indicate that karada originally referred more specifically to the sense of corpse, dead body.[3] However, the term is first attested in 950 with the sense of living body, with the dead body sense not attested until the early 1300s.[1]
