1. (general) Sound IPA^(key): /v/ (Pinyin: v).

• The letter was used to represent /v/ in the Old National Pronunciation (1913–1932). Now it is only used for dialectal pronunciations. In the old alphabet, it was the 5th letter, between ㄈ and ㄉ.
• 《汉语拼音方案》 defines a standard Pinyin pronunciation for each letter, using v to represent ㄪ (vō), which is obsolete in standard Mandarin. This is one of the only instances of the letter v being used in standard Pinyin.
