Supposedly named after 玄翁心昭 (Gennō Shinshō, “Shinshō Gennō”), sometimes spelled 源翁心昭, who according to legend, used one of these to smash the 殺生石 (Sesshōseki, “Killing Stone”). The ō reading for 翁 changes to nō as an instance of renjō (連声).
