In the hangul script, first attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 고솜〮돝 (Yale: kwòswómtwòth). Compound of 고솜〮 + Middle Korean 돝 (twòth, “pig, swine”) + ㅣ (-i). The origin of the first part could be related to 가시 (gasi). 고솜〮 was first attested as Late Old Korean 苦苫 in the text 《使高麗錄》 as part of the compound 苦苫苫 (“porcupine quill”).
