Borrowed from Chinese 赤根菜 (chìgēncài, literally “red-rooted vegetable”), probably (given other Chinese borrowings directly into Middle Korean) specifically from Early Mandarin 赤根菜 (EM *tʂʰiᴿkəntsʰaj).
