Etymology
First attested in the Sinjeung yuhap (新增類合 / 신증유합), 1576, as Middle Korean 댱마 (Yale: tyangma), a compound of 댱(長) (tyang, “long, lengthy”, a Sino-Korean morpheme) + 맣 (mah, “monsoon season”). The Sino-Korean element may have been added for disambiguation.
The Middle Korean 맣 (Yale: mah, “monsoon season”) does not survive in modern Korean, but is still found as the first element of 마파람 (maparam, “south wind”).
