Origin
First introduced in the emoji set of au by KDDI, a Japanese phone carrier, in January 2003 as a pixelated pink heart (π©·) with a red ribbon on its right. Later adopted by the Japanese mobile phone carrier SoftBank in June 2008 as an animated brown heart (π€) with a pink ribbon, followed by Apple (which popularised emoji outside of Japan) in November as a pink heart with a yellow ribbon and bow on its left.
Standardised by the Unicode Consortium in Unicode 6.0 in October 2010.
