From the verb él (to live) +‎ -v (noun-forming suffix, extrapolated based on nouns ending in -v, such as kedv, nyelv). Created by Pál Szemere during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. For similar derivations, compare szerv, terv, érv.[1]
