From Old Persian *bātiyakah (literally “phiale”), from *bātah (“wine, must”),[1] whence also Middle Persian bʾtk' (bādag, “wine, must”). Compare Persian بادیه (bâdiye, “large bowl”). Furnée compares βάτος (bátos, “measure for liquids”).
