From Proto-Hellenic *keřřō, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kér-ye-, *ye-present from the root *(s)ker- (to cut). Cognate with Old English scieran (English shear), Old Armenian քերեմ (kʻerem, I scratch).[1]
