Traditionally connected with Old Norse stúfr (“tree stump”) and Latvian stups (“broom”). See Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-. According to Beekes, a Pre-Greek origin is a good possibility due to the presence of the byform στύμος (stúmos).
