A foreign borrowing. Has been compared with Hittite (šulii̯a-, “lead”). Possibly a term of Gypsy-like street tricksters, see σαλός (salós, “fool”) starting to appear with Christians as a synonym of μωρός (mōrós) from the 4th century CE and Arabic سَالُوس (sālūs, “blandishment”) only found from such slang.
