Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥-ped-ih₂- (having three feet), from *tr̥- (three, combining form) + *pṓds (foot). The first element is conventionally made *kʷtur- (four, combining form), but Sihler (1995, p. 411) points out that early tables had three legs, not four. Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀵𐀟𐀼 (to-pe-za).
