From Proto-Mordvinic *ašə. Possibly from Proto-Uralic *ačka (gray? white?), whence may be Moksha акша (akša), Eastern Mari ош (), ошо (ošo, white) and Finnish haahka (eider).

Alternatively, borrowed from or influenced by a descendant of Proto-Turkic *āk (white).
