From earlier kal, from Proto-Yeniseian *kaɬ-Vŋʷ (“war”), ultimately derived from Proto-Yeniseian *-kaɬ (“to war, to fight”). Cognate with Yug каʼар (kaˤːr), Kott hali, Arin kel (“army”) and Pumpokol karɨ.
